Fariya Hashmat

A Research Fellow at the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (GIDS), Lahore School of Economics. She holds an MPhil in Development Studies, an MBA in Banking and Finance, and a BBA (Hons) in Finance, all from the Lahore School of Economics. She joined GIDS in 2021, after working as a Research Assistant (2018-2019) at the Institute. Her research expertise lies in involuntary displacement, with a particular focus on its intersections with climate change, social capital, urbanization, and land acquisition. As a displacement specialist, she actively explores the complexities of population displacement resulting both from infrastructure development projects and climate change-induced disasters such as floods. She has been presenting her work at international platforms and has collaborated with international researchers, government officials, and key stakeholders. Her research work reflects a strong commitment to advancing scholarship and policy dialogue on issues of displacement, climate change, resilience building and sustainable development.
