Ali Raza studied at the National College of Arts, Lahore (BFA, 1992) and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (MFA, 2001). His multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, digital image-making, and sculpture. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.
As an academic, Ali has extensive teaching experience at several universities in Pakistan and the United States, including the National College of Arts, Lahore; University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Appalachian State University, Boone; Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond; Virginia State University, Petersburg; and Brightpoint College, Midlothian.
After returning to Lahore in 2016, he served as Head of MA Art & Design Studies at the School of Visual Arts and Design, Beaconhouse National University, and in 2022, he joined the Lahore School of Economics as Professor of Visual Studies in the Department of Media Studies, Art, and Design.
He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including Printmakers of Pakistan 1947–1997 (Bradford Museum, 1997); Pakistan: Another Vision (Brunei Gallery, London, 2000); Painting Over the Lines: Five Contemporary Artists from Pakistan (Indo Center of Art and Culture, New York, 2002); Desperately Seeking Paradise (Art Dubai, 2008); Hanging Fire: Contemporary Art from Pakistan (Asia Society, New York, 2009); Resemble | Reassemble (Devi Foundation, Delhi, 2010); Art for Education – Contemporary Art from Pakistan (Palazzo Serbelloni, Milan, 2018); Unreal Estate (Canvas Gallery, Karachi, 2024); and Dharti Dhar Dhar Dharke Gi – Artist as Witness (COMO Museum, Lahore, 2024–25).
